46 Lies That Trap Many Christians – #45 and #46

Lie # 45 “Every statement in the Bible is absolutely true.”

No, or that would mean that all the terrible statements that the Pharisees and others made about Jesus, for example, are true. “Many of them said ‘He is possessed by a demon and is raving mad’” John 10:20. Yes, it is a true account of what people said but it is not a true statement. This is why we need the Holy Spirit, who inspired people to write down what we call the Bible, to lead and guide us into all truth by rightly dividing the word of truth. See Chapter Twelve and Appendix Twelve for more on how to properly interpret the Bible as we have it today.

Lie # 46 “Let your conscience be your guide.”

This is a common idea but not a good idea for Christians. Why? Because your conscience is a function of your soul life, not your perfect spirit-self in Christ – for which there is now no condemnation or accusation from God. However, your conscience is formed over time from your experiences – good and bad, right and wrong. That imperfect source is obviously not as good as the Holy Spirit who lives within you to “lead you into all truth” – Jesus who is the Truth. The essence and focus of Christianity is not morality (rule keeping) like it is in most religions. The essence of Christianity is having a relationship with our living God – with morality as a by-product. So, let the Holy Spirit be your infallible Guide! There is a whole chapter about the role of “conscience” in my “Discovering …” book.

This completes the list of 46 Lies which is the first half of this little book. The second half of this book is the first chapter of “Is There An Elephant In Your Church?” REMEMBER: Wrong believing which leads to wrong living. Conversely, right believing leads to right and prosperous living in Christ. Contact me (below) with any comments or questions about the content of this Blog. Lenny

NOTE: The book 52 Lies Heard In Church Every Sunday: And Why The Truth Is So Much Better by Steve McVey is another good resource for renewing your mind with Jesus’ whole Gospel of grace.
