Poverty And Sickness Do Not Please Your Heart, O Lord

LYRICS & COMMENTARY

LYRICS

Poverty and sickness do not please your heart, O Lord. 3 John 1:2
They are part of Satan’s plan to steal and kill. John 10:10
Through His lies and trickery, he got Adam to rebel,
Causing mankind to be poor and ill.

Yet many still believe that You send sickness and disease
And they think You want to keep them poor.
But, they turn around and pray to You for healing or a job,
Not thinking what they’re asking for.

They sadly cry to You, who they blame for all their pain,
To fix the very thing that they blame You for.
They’re confused by Satan’s lies, so have double-minded thoughts,
Ignorance and doubt have closed the door! James 1:7-8

They trust in what tradition says instead on what You’ve Done,
And they focus on the circumstance they see. 2 Cor. 5:16
But healing comes from focusing on You and what You’ve Done
For “By Your stripes” all healing is now free. Is. 53:5

You only do good things and, with healing in Your wings,
Came to earth to set all captives free.
As a Man, You came with grace, to reveal our Father’s face,
And to share Your Life abundantly. Jn. 10:10

So I thank You for Your Mercy and Your sacrificial Love
That destroyed the curse of poverty and shame. Dt. 8:18
And, by faith, receive Your finished work of Resurrection Life,
And Authority and Power in Your Name.

Poverty and sickness do not please Your heart, O Lord.
They are part of Satan’s plan to steal and kill.
But You ransomed us from him and You paid for all our sin, 2 Cor. 5:18-19
Through Your love, we’re free to do Your will. Gal. 5:1

COMMENTARY

If you were taught like I was growing up, this song might be a shock to you. Well-meaning pastors and teachers taught that the poor are holier and “closer to God” than the rich. Even the Book of James rants against the “rich.” And even today, some teach that “God makes people sick to teach them a lesson.” I now know that is blasphemy against God’s totally good nature. How many people did Jesus make sick – and He is the exact representation of God in human form? Yet, some still rant against the “health and wealth” teachers of God’s grace as though God the Father is a mean, stingy ogre.

Might He one day say to them who insult His lovingkindness “I never knew you” because they never knew who He really is – a gracious father, as portrayed in Jesus’ parable about the prodigal sons. Neither one of them had an accurate concept of who their father really was while growing up, yet he still loved them. But notice, Jesus did not complete the story regarding the second, angry, self-righteous son.

That is why I included the Four Part series of Posts on Who Is God According To the Bible? in this Blog – starting in April. Your concept of God has a lot to do with how much you open yourself up to receive all that He wants to provide for you. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you to renew your mind where necessary to come to know and love your Abba-Father, Daddy God, as He truly is.

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written: “CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE.” Gal 3:13

But He was pierced for our offenses. He was crushed for our wrongdoings. The punishment for our well-being was laid upon Him and by His wounds we are healed. Isaiah 53:5

But you are to remember the LORD your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, in order to confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day. Deuteronomy 8:18

And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19
