Teach Me How To Rest

LYRICS & COMMENTARY

LYRICS

Teach me how to rest in You, O Lord, Heb 4:8-11
Gladly yielding to Your sovereignty.
Teach me how to rest in You, O Lord,
Trusting in Your love for me. Psalm 91:1-2

I was nothing without You,
Doomed to failure and shame. Eph 2:4-5
But in You I can do all Your love calls me to,
For the sake or Your glorious Name. Eph. 1:20-23

Teach me how to rest in You, O Lord,
Gladly yielding to Your sovereignty.
Teach me how to rest in You, O Lord,
Trusting in Your love for me.
Trusting in Your Mercy, Lord,
Your Grace, Your Truth, Your Life.
Your Word is true.

COMMENTARY

1 One who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
Will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,
My God, in whom I trust!”
Psalm 91:1-2

28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. 30 For My yoke is comfortable, and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

8 Now if Joshua had given them rest (in the Promised Land), he would not have spoken afterwards of another day 9 Consequently, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. 10 For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His. 11 Therefore let’s make every effort to enter that rest (under the New Covenant of Grace), so that no one will fall by following the same example of disobedience (under the Mosaic Covenant of works). Hebrews 4:8-11

This revelation of “God’s rest” is directly connected to the terms of the New Covenant where Jesus has DONE all we need done regarding our salvation. We are all in Adam when born of humans and can then be reborn of God in Christ – just by believing and receiving God’s offer of rebirth, by His Grace through faith. Renewing our works-based thinking due to being in Adam originally, is a “labor” of agreeing with God’s ways that are not our ways – or the ways of the world system we are initially immersed in.

As one-year-olds, we were all dependent on our parents for everything. As we age, we should become less dependent on them and others in the Seen Realm than we were. We might become a parent ourself – and have one-year-olds dependent on us. But, whether we recognize it or not, we never outgrow our need for – and dependence on – God for our very existence and supply. When reborn of God, we are now able to know Him personally and intentionally, receiving ALL this wonderful Father wants to give us because He delights in and favors us as His beloved children. That is the secret and difference between laboring to “please God” by our own exhausting efforts (works-righteousness) rather than by receiving and resting in His gift of permanent right-standing that qualifies us for every blessing He wants to provide by trusting in His love and provision on every level. That is what Abraham learned to do – and he was still in Adam.

I Receive By Faith All The Benefits is just one of the scripture-based songs on this Blog that will inspire you to become a good receiver of all of God’s love and blessings that belong to you because you are in Christ. What is true for Jesus is now true for YOU! Amen.
